I acknowledge the people of the Eora, Darug and Dharawal nations as Traditional Custodians of the lands that now make up Greater Sydney. I recognise their continuing connection to country, community and culture, and pay my respects to elders past and present.
Over the course of about a year I visited every train and metro stop on the Sydney rail network - got out, went for a walk and took some photos. I had recently moved to the city, and this project was a way of orienting myself. A kind of hyperlocal-tourism meets extended scavenger hunt.
I used the stations as a ready made and somewhat representative catalogue of Sydney. They gave me a set of anchor points, making me spread my time and destinations broadly. They were also an excuse - a reason to visit parts of the city I had no need or claim to.
Turns out I picked an eventful time to record Sydney via public transport. While I was making this project the T1 line split (or rather re-split) to create the T9 line, and the Metro North West line opened. The T6 line also closed shortly after I finished.
An extract of this project appeared in Issue 5 of Desired Landscapes (2021). Below is an edit.
